Different Types of Flour - Die mense maak dit nie maklik nie hoor ->

Zelfrijzend bak bloem - Self raising flour. Perfect for those flapjacks, pancakes or muffins.

The next few items I will start with the name you know...

Baking soda - Baksoda or bicarbonate of soda

Tarwebloem - Snowflake meel. This is their all purpose flour

Griesmeel - The dutch version of mieliepap I suppose. Normally used for porridge. I would class this as a tasty wheat type of maize

Castor sugar - kristalsuiker

Baking powder - Bakpoeder

Patentbloem - Sifted much finer. Often used for light breads and pastries.

Semolina - Pasta flour - Perfect for making your own pasta and bread dough.

Icing sugar - Poedersuiker - However note that the tubes you buy can get expensive fast and boy is this a fine icing sugar. I prefer buying from cake shops instead of the grocery store.

Brown Sugar -Basterdsuiker

Its good and clean and fresh tra-la-la -
I know you sang that!

There are several brands here that are similar to what you were used to back in South Africa. It may take a bit of trial and error to find the ones that work best for you.

Some online stores that offer great value for money include 123schoon.nl, Plein.nl, and Wibra. You’ll often find great deals—you just need to keep an eye on store discounts and brochures, and don’t hesitate to ask around. Talking to others can lead to great tips and savings!
